Nematodes for Grubs: Do They Actually Work? (A Licensed Specialist's Honest Take)

TL;DR

\nNematodes for grubs are a legitimate biological control - but they only work within a very narrow timing, temperature, and moisture window.
\nFive specific conditions cause nematode treatments to fail: wrong timing, dry soil, heavy infestation, wrong species, and re-infestation from neighbouring properties.
\nProfessional chemical treatment (Acelepryn and Tetrino) delivers consistent, guaranteed results where nematodes fall short - especially for serious or recurring infestations.
\nWhen to call a professional: if you've applied nematodes one or more seasons in a row and the wildlife damage keeps returning, it's time for a more reliable approach.

Every BC homeowner dealing with a torn-up lawn eventually hears the same advice: \"Just use nematodes.\" It sounds simple. It sounds natural. And it comes from a well-meaning place - nematodes really are a legitimate tool for nematodes for grub control. But as a licensed applicator who treats lawns in Surrey and Langley after nematodes have already failed, I can tell you there's a lot the garden centre doesn't mention.

This post is not a sales pitch. It's an honest breakdown of how nematodes work, exactly why they fail, and how to decide which approach is right for your lawn. If nematodes are the right tool for your situation, I'll tell you. If they're not, I'll tell you that too.

How Nematodes for Grubs Actually Work

Nematodes are microscopic roundworms that occur naturally in soil. The species used for chafer beetle control - specifically Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Hb) - are parasitic to insect larvae. When applied correctly, they move through moist soil, locate grubs, and enter through natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that kill the host within 24–48 hours.

Here's what nematodes genuinely have going for them:

\n100% natural - no synthetic chemicals involved
\nSafe for people, pets, plants, and pollinators when used as directed
\nAvailable at most garden centres in BC, typically around $25 per package covering 2,000–4,000 sq. ft.
\nEffective in ideal conditions - when timing, moisture, and species are all correct, they can achieve meaningful reductions in grub populations

The problem isn't that nematodes don't work. The problem is that \"ideal conditions\" is a much narrower target than most homeowners realize.

When to Apply Nematodes - The Narrow Window

Timing is everything with nematodes for grubs. In BC, the European chafer beetle follows a predictable life cycle: adults emerge and mate in June, eggs are laid in the soil through July, and newly hatched grubs begin feeding near the surface in late July through mid-August.

That late-July-to-mid-August window is when nematodes are most effective. Here's why:

\nGrubs are small and soft - newly hatched larvae are far more vulnerable to nematode infection than mature grubs
\nGrubs are near the surface - nematodes can reach them before they burrow deeper
\nSoil temperatures are in range - the ideal window is 12–20°C, with peak effectiveness around 15–18°C

Spring application (May) hits overwintered grubs that are larger, tougher, and already preparing to pupate. You'll get some control, but you're working against the biology. The Metro Vancouver European Chafer Beetle Best Management Practices guide recommends the last two weeks of July as the optimal application period - a window of roughly 14 days.

Miss it by a few weeks in either direction, and your results will be significantly reduced.

5 Reasons Nematodes Fail

This is the part most guides skip. Understanding why nematodes fail is just as important as knowing how to apply nematodes to lawn correctly. In my experience treating lawns across Surrey and Langley, these are the five most common reasons homeowners don't get the results they expected.

1. Wrong Timing

Applied too early in spring, you're targeting large, late-instar grubs that are nearly done feeding and are physiologically harder to kill. Applied too late in fall, grubs have already burrowed 15–30 cm deep - well below the zone where nematodes can effectively reach them. The window for when to apply nematodes for grubs in BC is genuinely narrow: roughly mid-July to mid-August. Outside that window, success rates drop sharply.

2. Dry Soil Conditions

Nematodes are aquatic organisms at the microscopic scale - they need a film of moisture to move through soil. BC summers are notoriously dry, and many lawns in Surrey and Langley are not irrigated consistently due to watering restrictions. Without adequate soil moisture before, during, and for two to three weeks after application, nematodes die in the upper soil layer before they ever reach the grubs. This is one of the most common failure points we see, and it's entirely invisible to the homeowner - the nematodes were applied correctly, but the soil conditions defeated them.

3. Heavy Infestation

Even under ideal conditions, nematodes achieve kill rates in the range of 50–75% according to field research and extension data. For a mild infestation, that may be enough to prevent visible damage. But for a heavy infestation - 10 or more grubs per square foot, which is common in established problem areas - that means 25–50% of grubs survive and continue feeding on your grass roots. Wildlife like crows, skunks, and raccoons can detect even low grub densities and will still tear up your lawn. A 60% kill rate sounds good until you realize the remaining grubs are still enough to trigger serious digging damage.

4. Wrong Nematode Species

Not all nematodes are the same. For chafer beetle nematodes specifically, the correct species is Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Hb). Other species commonly sold in Canada - including Steinernema feltiae and Steinernema carpocapsae - are effective against different pests but have minimal efficacy against European chafer grubs. If you pick up a generic \"beneficial nematode\" product without checking the species, there's a real chance you're applying something that simply won't work on chafer beetle larvae, regardless of how perfectly you time and water the application.

5. The Grubs Come Back

This is the part that frustrates homeowners most. Even a successful nematode application doesn't prevent re-infestation. Adult chafer beetles fly - they emerge every June and can travel from neighbouring properties, parks, and untreated lawns. If your neighbours haven't treated, new eggs will be laid in your lawn every single year. Nematodes leave no residual protection. That means annual reapplication is required indefinitely, and each year carries the same set of timing, moisture, and species risks. Many homeowners we speak with have applied nematodes two, three, even four years in a row with diminishing returns - not because they did it wrong, but because the biology of the pest works against a one-and-done solution.

What Happens When Nematodes Don't Work?

When a nematode application falls short, the damage doesn't stop - it compounds. Grass roots continue to be consumed through late summer and fall, weakening turf that is already stressed by summer heat. By spring, the lawn rolls back like a carpet in the areas of heaviest feeding.

Then the wildlife damage intensifies. Crows, skunks, and raccoons are remarkably efficient at detecting grubs even at low densities. A lawn with 30% of its original grub population remaining will still attract foraging wildlife - and the digging damage from animals is often more visually dramatic than the root damage itself.

The pattern we see most often: a homeowner applies nematodes in July, sees some improvement, then faces the same torn-up lawn the following spring. They apply nematodes again. The cycle repeats. Each year, the infestation re-establishes from neighbouring properties, and the cumulative cost of annual nematode applications - plus lawn repair - adds up quickly.

The Alternative - Professional Chemical Treatment

For lawns with serious, recurring, or heavy infestations, professional chemical treatment offers a fundamentally different level of reliability. Two products are used in our licensed applications:

Acelepryn (chlorantraniliprole):

Applied April through June as a preventative treatment
Works by stopping newly hatched grubs before they begin feeding on roots
Remains active in the soil through the hatching period, providing a longer protection window than nematodes
\nHealth Canada registered under the Pest Control Products Act; applied by licensed specialists only

Tetrino (cyantraniliprole):

Applied July to September as an early curative treatment for active early infestations\n
Targets grubs already present and feeding in the soil
Effective on early-instar grubs
Also Health Canada registered; requires a licensed applicator

Both products belong to the diamide class of insecticides, which have a targeted mode of action and a well-established safety profile for use around people and pets when applied according to label directions. Neither is a neonicotinoid. Applications are backed by a guarantee - something a bag of nematodes from a garden centre cannot offer.

The key difference from nematodes: one properly timed professional application provides reliable control of over 90% of the grub population.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use nematodes and chemical treatment together?

Generally, no - and it's not necessary. If you're applying Acelepryn as a preventative in spring, the grubs won't establish in meaningful numbers, making nematodes redundant. If you're using Tetrino as an early curative, it works more reliably than nematodes on active infestations. Mixing approaches adds cost without adding meaningful benefit. That said, if you've already applied nematodes and are unsure whether they worked, let us know - we can assess your lawn and recommend next steps.

How do I know if my nematode application worked?

The honest answer: it's difficult to tell in the short term. You won't see dead grubs on the surface. The best indicators are reduced wildlife digging activity in late summer and fall, and healthy turf that doesn't lift or roll in spring. If you're seeing significant animal damage or turf loss despite a nematode application, that's a strong signal the treatment didn't achieve adequate control.

Are chemical treatments safe for kids and pets?

Yes, when applied by a licensed specialist following label directions. Both Acelepryn and Tetrino are Health Canada registered and have established re-entry intervals - typically 24 hours for treated areas to dry before normal use resumes. Neither product is a neonicotinoid, and both have a targeted mode of action that poses low risk to non-target organisms, including pollinators, when applied correctly. We follow all label requirements on every application.

How much does professional grub treatment cost?

Pricing is area-based - calculated by the square footage of your lawn rather than a flat rate. This means you pay for what you actually need, without overpaying for a large property estimate on a small lawn. We provide transparent quotes before any work begins. Contact us for a site-specific quote for your Surrey or Langley property.

Do I need to treat every year?

With nematodes, yes - they provide no residual protection, and chafer beetles re-infest from neighbouring properties every June. With Acelepryn (preventative), annual treatment is recommended because new adult beetles fly in each season. However, the application is straightforward, the timing window is broader, and the results are consistent - making it a much more manageable annual commitment than the nematode cycle.

Closing

If you've applied nematodes for grubs and the damage keeps coming back, you're not doing it wrong. The biology of the European chafer beetle in BC makes nematodes a difficult tool to use successfully - the timing window is narrow, BC summers are dry, and re-infestation is essentially guaranteed without a preventative strategy.

You may simply need a more reliable tool.
