A Surrey lawn can look perfectly healthy in June and be reduced to rolled-back strips of turf by late summer. Homeowners often blame the wildlife, and the crows and raccoons certainly do the visible damage. What actually draws them in is a food source hiding under the surface: chafer beetle and Japanese beetle grubs feeding on grass roots. Understanding that link changes how you treat the problem. Spraying, trapping or chasing birds away solves nothing if the grubs stay put. The real fix happens in the soil, and the timing of that fix matters as much as the product itself. Our Grub Stopr service provides expertise lawn treatment in Surrey.

Why Crows and Raccoons Tear Up Surrey Lawns

Crows and raccoons are opportunistic feeders, and a grub-heavy lawn is an easy meal. Once they learn that a patch of turf hides fat, protein-rich larvae just below the surface, they come back night after night. Raccoons flip sod over in wide, messy sheets. Crows jab and peel the grass in search of individual grubs, leaving a pockmarked, shredded surface that looks like it was attacked with a rake.

The frustrating part is that the damage looks sudden. Grubs can be feeding quietly for weeks while the turf above slowly loses its grip on the soil. By the time the animals notice, the lawn is already weakened. That means a lawn with visible wildlife damage usually has an established grub population, not a new one. Treatment should target the larvae and then address the torn-up turf that remains.

What European Chafer Beetle and Japanese Beetle Grubs Do to Grass

Grubs are the larval stage of chafer beetles and Japanese beetles. The adults emerge, mate and lay eggs in the soil, and the larvae that hatch feed on grass roots through the warm months. Roots are how turf anchors itself and takes up water. When enough roots are chewed through, the lawn loses its grip entirely.

Homeowners in Surrey, White Rock and Langley often describe the same sequence of events:

The lawn starts to feel spongy or soft underfoot, almost like walking on a mattress.
Sections of turf peel back easily, sometimes lifting like a loose carpet.
Birds and raccoons arrive and begin digging in the same spots.
Bare soil appears in patches that spread as the animals return.

By the time the turf peels, the root damage is already advanced. This is why professional treatment programs focus heavily on prevention rather than waiting for visible destruction.

Preventative Grub Treatment in the Spring

The strongest position a Surrey homeowner can take is to treat before grubs cause damage. Our preventative treatment uses an Acelepryn application, which provides season-long protection when applied at the right point in the spring. The goal is straightforward: stop the larvae from establishing in the first place, so the wildlife never finds a reason to visit.

Prevention suits lawns that have had grub problems before, properties surrounded by turf that has been affected, and anyone who would rather not gamble on another season of lawn damage and costly repairs. Because the product works on the larvae as they begin feeding, the timing of the application matters. Applying too early or too late reduces how much protection the lawn actually receives. This is one of the clearest reasons to work with a specialist rather than treating grubs as an afterthought between mowing visits.

Early Curative Treatment for Active Infestations

If grubs are already active and the lawn is being torn apart, prevention is no longer the right conversation. Our early curative treatment uses Tetrino, which contains tetraniliprole, to knock down an existing infestation during the late season. The objective shifts from blocking new larvae to reducing the population that is currently feeding on your roots.

Curative work is best handled quickly. Every week that passes gives the grubs more time to consume roots and gives raccoons and crows more nights to dig. A lawn that has been stripped down to bare soil can still be brought back, but it takes longer and requires more than a single application. Grub control stops the bleeding; lawn repair rebuilds what was lost.

Why DIY Nematodes Usually Disappoint

Nematodes are the most common do-it-yourself recommendation passed around neighbourhood groups, and they are also the most common source of frustration. The problems stack up quickly. Nematodes are living organisms with strict handling and storage requirements. They need specific soil temperature and moisture conditions to work. They need to be watered in properly and at the right time of day. Even when everything is done correctly, results are inconsistent enough that many homeowners end up repeating the process year after year without solving anything.

Grub Stopr was built around that gap. The service is licensed, specialized pest control for chafer beetle and Japanese beetle grubs, not a general lawn maintenance add-on. Treatments are backed by guaranteed results, including reapplication and service warranty policies, so a failed season is not simply your problem to absorb. For homeowners who have already tried the DIY route and watched the raccoons come back anyway, that shift from hope to guarantee is usually the deciding factor.

Lawn Repair After Grub Damage

Killing the grubs does not restore a lawn that has already been ripped apart. Once the animals stop digging, the remaining damage needs to be addressed directly. Repair and restoration work typically involves:

Dethatching to remove dead plant material that blocks new growth.
Topsoil application to level uneven, dug-up sections and give new seed something to root into.
Overseeding to reintroduce grass into bare and thin areas.
Eco-friendly lawn care maintenance to keep the recovered lawn healthy going forward.

Timing matters here too. Seed needs contact with soil, consistent moisture and enough growing season to establish before conditions turn. Patching a lawn properly in the right window gives it a genuine chance to fill back in, while a rushed repair often leaves thin, patchy results that invite weeds the following year. Combining restoration with an ongoing treatment plan keeps the same problem from returning.

Everyday Lawn Care That Keeps Surrey Grass Thick

Grub treatment protects a lawn. Regular maintenance is what makes that lawn worth protecting. A thicker, healthier stand of grass tolerates stress better, recovers faster and shows damage less dramatically. Local lawn care providers in Surrey commonly handle a mix of services that support turf health, including mowing and edging, moss and weed control, power raking, irrigation and drainage.

Common lawn care tasks in Surrey and what they contribute

Regular weekly mowing

Keeps grass at a consistent height, which supports denser growth

Watering wisely

Water deeply, once a weekly. Encourages deeper roots instead of shallow surface growth

Moss and weed control

Reduces competition for water, nutrients and space

Power raking

Clears built-up thatch so air and water reach the soil

Organic fertilization

Provide a constant supply of nutrients throughout the growing season to build a lush, deep green healthy turf that can manage the stresses of the weather.

Surrey's climate creates a specific set of pressures. Mild, wet stretches encourage moss and fungal issues, while dry summer periods stress shallow-rooted turf. Lawns that are cut correctly, watered deeply but less often, and kept free of heavy thatch hold up far better against both. Maintenance alone will not stop a grub infestation, and grub treatment alone will not fix a lawn that is thin, mossy and poorly watered. The two work together.

Choosing a Lawn Treatment Provider in Surrey

Plenty of companies in the area offer grass cutting, groundskeeping and landscaping, and many of them also list lawn care as part of a broader service menu. That is fine for routine upkeep, but grub infestations are a different kind of problem. Generalist providers rarely carry the specialized products or the seasonal timing knowledge that effective grub control requires.

When comparing options, a few practical steps help. Search directories such as Google let you read reviews from local pros. You will find our Grub Stopr service ranks very high in 5 star reviews under our Little Green Eco Lawns listing. We also provide free, no-obligation quotes, which are quick and detailed. We will confirm if the approach is preventative or curative, and what happens if the treatment does not work. A real guarantee is written down, not implied. Currently, our current service area covers Surrey, White Rock and Langley. You will find our transparent pricing on our website grubstopr.com.

It also helps to think about the calendar. Preventative treatment is a spring decision, and homeowners who wait until the raccoons show up in force are usually looking at curative treatment plus lawn repair instead. Deciding earlier is cheaper in effort and far less stressful than watching a lawn get shredded.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I treat my lawn for grubs in Surrey?

Timing depends on the goal. Preventative treatment is a spring application, since it needs to be in place before larvae begin feeding to deliver season-long protection. Curative treatment is used later, when grubs are already active and the lawn is showing damage. If you are unsure which situation applies to your property, an inspection before treatment will confirm whether grubs are present and which approach fits.

Why are crows and raccoons digging up my lawn?

They are feeding on grubs. Chafer beetle and Japanese beetle larvae live just below the surface and feed on grass roots, which makes them an easy meal for wildlife. The animals are a symptom rather than the cause. Removing the grubs removes the food source, which is what stops the digging over time instead of just for a few nights.

Do nematodes actually work for chafer beetle grubs?

Results are inconsistent. Nematodes are living organisms that require specific soil temperature and moisture conditions, careful storage and proper watering in to have any chance of working. Many Surrey homeowners try them repeatedly without lasting results. Specialized products applied by a licensed provider at the correct time of year offer a far more reliable outcome, backed by a guarantee.

Can a lawn recover after grub damage?

Yes, in most cases. Once the grub population is under control and wildlife stops digging, restoration work such as overseeding, dethatching and topsoil application can rebuild bare and thin sections. Severely damaged lawns need more time and attention than lightly affected ones. Pairing repair with an ongoing treatment plan prevents the same damage from returning the following season.

Does lawn treatment in Surrey include repair work?

It should, because grub control and turf repair solve different halves of the problem. Treating the soil stops the larvae, while overseeding, dethatching and topsoil restore what the animals destroyed. Ask any provider whether repair is part of their offering and when it should be scheduled relative to treatment. Doing both in the correct order gives the lawn its best chance of coming back thick and even.
